NC House Member & US Army Lt. Col (Ret) Announces Candidacy for Open Seat in NC4

Fayetteville – State Representative John Szoka (R-Cumberland) announced today that he will run for the newly-drawn 4th Congressional District in North Carolina, which includes all or portions of Cumberland (including Fort Bragg), Johnston, Sampson, Harnett and Wayne Counties.  Szoka, who graduated from West Point and served as a Lt. Colonel in the US Army, has represented Cumberland County in the North Carolina House of Representatives since 2012. He is the Conference Chairman for the House Republican Caucus.

“Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi and the far-left are damaging our country every day, and this district needs someone in DC who knows how to fight back,” said Szoka. “I’ve done that my entire career: in the US Army, in business, and in the State House. I’ll take my military experience, knowledge of this district, and conservative values to Congress and fight the far-left every step of the way.”

During his time in the legislature, Szoka has been on the front line of some of the most impactful conservative policy victories in recent North Carolina history: balanced budgets, tax cuts, tax reform, regulatory reform, teacher pay raises, voter ID, crackdown on sanctuary cities. Most recently, he led the effort to exempt military retirement from state income taxes.

“What DC politicians are doing to this country is appalling,” Szoka said. “Abandoning our military, forgetting our veterans, wrecking our economy. The Washington liberals will hate me, but our military, veterans, and North Carolina taxpayers will have no truer friend.  It’s absolutely imperative that this district, with its heavy military presence and agricultural roots, be represented by someone with military experience and knowledge of the issues affecting the constituents. I look forward to successful making that case in the weeks and months ahead.”

A retired Lieutenant Colonel of the U.S. Army, John Szoka is a businessman and State Rep. who currently represents Fort Bragg and much of rural Cumberland County surrounding Fayetteville.

While the Army brought John and his family to Fayetteville, when he retired from active duty he choose to stay here and has lived in Fayetteville since 1994. He has owned and operated several successful small businesses in Fayetteville.

John and his wife Laurie have been married for over 30 years and their children, now grown, attended public elementary, middle, and high schools in Cumberland County.  Active in their church and their community, John is committed to leaving North Carolina a better place for our children and grandchildren.

John was born in Ohio and graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with a degree in Engineering. He went on to earn a graduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in Operations Research, a field combining mathematics and computer modeling, which is used for allocating resources and solving complex problems.
